SHAC-School Health Advisory Council

What is SHAC?

The Tornillo ISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals who represent segments of the community. The mission of the Tornillo ISD SHAC is to promote a healthy lifestyle through education and awareness and to empower each student to achieve their individual learning potential by promoting optimal health, wellness, and safety with the support of parents and community members. The council meets several times during the school year and acts collectively to provide advice on aspects of the school district’s health program. 

TISD School Health Advisory Council will meet four times during the 2019-2020 school year. Meetings which the Wellness Policy/Plan/Implementation are scheduled to be discussed are highlighted below:

  • September 23, 2019

  • November 18,2019 (Wellness Plan)

  • February 10, 2020  (Wellness Plan)

  • April 6, 2020  (meeting cancelled due to school closure-COVID) 

Fitness Gram Assessment and Reporting:
Given the systemic closure of schools resulting from the spread of COVID-19 virus, the govenor has issued authority under Texas Government Code 418.016 to suspend the following two requirements for the 2019-2020 school year:
1. Assessment of the physical fitness of students using Fitness Gram (TEC, 38.101)
2. School district and charter school reporting of Fitness Gram results to TEA (TEC, 38.103)

TISD School Health Advisory Council met five times during the 2018-2019 school year:

  • December 17, 2018

  • February 18, 2019

  • May 2, 2019

School Health Advisory Council Statement for Public Inspection

District policies adopted to ensure that elementary school, middle school, and junior high school students engage in physical activity can be found on our website at under Policies, Board Policy Manual Online:
