Francis M. Brooks

Soon after being hired in 1963 as a math teacher by the Tornillo Independent School District at the age of 24, Mr. Francis M. Brooks became an individual held in high esteem by students, colleagues, and parents. Along with teaching a variety of math classes during the early part of his career, he also taught many valuable lessons to students outside of the classroom in his role as a coach.

Students described him as a kind and generous person who always had encouraging words and motivating praise. Countless Tornillo graduates were inspired by Mr. Brooks to enroll in college and many chose futures in education as a result of his positive influence.

Mr. Brooks made Tornillo his home and devoted twenty-five years of his life to TISD. He was a teacher and coach for most of those years. Mr. Brooks also served as principal and provided leadership at the top as superintendent for the last six years of his long and successful tenure at TISD. After retirement, his passion for teaching led him back to the classroom and he taught at Father Yermo, Fabens and Fort Hancock where he shared his knowledge and passion for math and science with a new generation.

Former students spanning three decades remember Mr. Brooks as a “wonderful person, coach, teacher, mentor, administrator and role model who never degraded or underestimated his students and players.”
